Summary

We still have time to change the world。 From Greta Thunberg, the world's leading climate activist, comes the essential handbook for making it happen。

You might think it's an impossible task: secure a safe future for life on Earth, at a scale and speed never seen, against all the odds。 There is hope - but only if we listen to the science before it's too late。

In The Climate Book, Greta Thunberg has gathered the wisdom of over one hundred experts - geophysicists, oceanographers and meteorologists; engineers, economists and mathematicians; historians, philosophers and indigenous leaders - to equip us all with the knowledge we need to combat climate disaster。 Alongside them, she shares her own stories of demonstrating and uncovering greenwashing around the world, revealing how much we have been kept in the dark。 This is one of our biggest challenges, she shows, but also our greatest source of hope。 Once we are given the full picture, how can we not act? And if a schoolchild's strike could ignite a global protest, what could we do collectively if we tried?

We are alive at the most decisive time in the history of humanity。 Together, we can do the seemingly impossible。 But it has to be us, and it has to be now。

By this time nearly everyone has heard or read enough about climate change to form some basic conclusions about the trend。 After reading "The Climate Book" I feel optimistic and pessimistic at the same time。 I'm optimistic because Greta Thunberg is sounding the alarm with an array of scientists from around the world who have contributed to this work。 It is no longer a fringe element of experts who are predicting dire consequences for future generations unless we change our current practices。 How By this time nearly everyone has heard or read enough about climate change to form some basic conclusions about the trend。 After reading "The Climate Book" I feel optimistic and pessimistic at the same time。 I'm optimistic because Greta Thunberg is sounding the alarm with an array of scientists from around the world who have contributed to this work。 It is no longer a fringe element of experts who are predicting dire consequences for future generations unless we change our current practices。 However, after reading the book I'm also pessimistic。 The articles explain in alarming clarity how many aspects of life on this planet will be affected if we go beyond the tipping point。 The sacrifices we've made as a civilization pale in comparison to the sacrifices we must make in the future if we are to have a chance of moderating our warming planet。 I'm not sure we are up to the challenge。I give Greta credit for being an outstanding spokesperson for the younger generation with this book。 However, I fear we will be able to do too little too late to escape the major consequences of the mismanagement of our planet。 I apologize to future generations of climate refugees who are bound to be affected by our irresponsible practices。 。。。more

First, this is not several hundred pages of being shamed by a Swedish teenager。 And please don't think I'm dismissing her。 This young lady impresses and inspires me more than I could ever articulate! Also, Greta did not write this book on her own。 It's made up of several dozen short, digestible essays。 Greta probably wrote, maybe, 20 percent of them? The rest were written by scientists, activists, economists, human rights advocates, novelists, etc。 You get the idea, subject area experts from widely diverse fields and from many different walks of life。 There are many names you will recognize。And the reason so many different experts and voices are required is that The Climate Book really strives to illustrate ALL the different ways that climate change impacts our lives。 Spoiler alert: It's way more than you are thinking。This book is not putting a shiny, happy spin on the situation。 Nor should it。 The time for ignoring reality is long since past。 Still, I can certainly understand not wanting to plow through the entire book in a day, as I did。 It's a lot to take in。 The brilliance of the format is how well it lends itself to reading an essay or two a day, and letting it sink in。 It's a book you're going to want to own, because when you get to the end, you're going to want to go back to the beginning and start over。 These are messages worth revisiting until you have fully absorbed them。And as my comments above imply, the quality of the essays individually, and the content of the book as a whole, is superlative。 A lot of the contributors have written books of their own, many of which I've read。 Nonetheless, I felt like I was taking in so much new information here, I think because of the sheer scope of what was covered, as well as the immediacy of what was being presented。Truly, this is a book that should be read by every person on this planet。 Five BIG stars from me! 。。。more

Well done。 The key for me on this book is to read the whole thing, and focus on the hopeful aspects。 The last thing we need is to throw up our hands (individually and collectively) and give up。 It seems to me that governments and corporations have the most power to right the climate ship, but we can all contribute too。 Recommended。Thanks very much for the free review copy for review!!

This is a very good book on what is probably the most important subject today, Climate Change。 What i liked about it most is that it covers all aspect of climate change - evidence, impact on various areas both geographically and biologically, history, the political situation, what can be done to limit its impact and damage。 It does so in a way that I consider its second biggest strength - short chapters, each written by experts in their fields。 Of course, that very strength also has its limitati This is a very good book on what is probably the most important subject today, Climate Change。 What i liked about it most is that it covers all aspect of climate change - evidence, impact on various areas both geographically and biologically, history, the political situation, what can be done to limit its impact and damage。 It does so in a way that I consider its second biggest strength - short chapters, each written by experts in their fields。 Of course, that very strength also has its limitations - no in depth information and also inconsistent writing styles and use of terminology。 All its chapters are good, but some are more challenging to read due to assumptions of previous knowledge and terminology。 And all give interesting and relevant information that those who are interested in finding out more can then go look。 This book admirably fulfills its purpose in making it known that climate change is not something that is going to happen, it is already happening。 The only question now is to how best to limit its damage in the coming years and decades。 It also not only sounds the alarm but goes over about why humanity has been so complacent on this world threatening issues, and at providing hope that all is far from lost, and giving information on ways to start fighting back on climate change。 Let me also mention that I especially liked the chapters from indigenous people going over their direct experience with climate change and what they had to offer in regards to moving forward。 As is usual with almost all of Greta's works it excels at sounding the alarm。 In this case even though the book is largely written by others。 Very much worth reading。 。。。more

To be honest this is a scary book。 Accounts and opinions of some of the worlds best climate scientists all tell us this isn’t a possibility this is happening and many of our lifetimes。 Truly frightening what the western world has done to this planet and tragic to hear the people who have least to do with it will be the hardest hit。 Most will not enjoy this book but my goodness does it make you look up and listen。

It should。 As Greta says, “Either we stay below the climate targets set in the Paris Agreement and thus avoid the worst risks of setting off irreversible changes beyond human control, or we do not” (20)。 As Johan Rockstrom states, “We are determining whether we leave to our children and their children a planet that will continue drifting towards less and less inhabitable states” (36-37)。 tThis impactful book then shifts to essays informing readers of how climate works。 One of the essays that resonated the most was Naomi Oreskes’s Why Didn’t They Act, in which she opens with the following quote: "When future historians ask, ‘Why didn’t people take action to stop the climate crisis when they had known about it for decades,’ a prominent part of the answer will be the history of denial and obfuscation by the fossil fuel industry, and the ways in which people in positions of power and privilege refused to acknowledge that climate change was a manifestation of a broken economic system。 "(29) Further, “Between 200 and 2016, fossil fuel interests in the US alone likely spent close to $2 billion blocking climate action” (30)。 tIn the chapter entitled, How Our Planet is Changing, weather patterns and impacts on everything from wildfires and soil are discussed。 As Greta starts the chapter, she writes on the mystifying denial of so many people concerning climate change and its impact, noting the term itself may be a part of the problem。 She says, “Perhaps that is partly why so many people still think of climate change as a slow, linear and even rather harmless process。 But the climate is not just changing。 It is destabilizing。 It is breaking down” (72)。 This is why this chapter was so vital。 As Reiderike Otto puts it, “Every region in the world is seeing its impacts- whether it’s changing seasons, melting glaciers, or rising seals levels- but most people are experiencing it through extreme weather events” (67)。 Quite succinctly he says “…those of us who are not completely delusional have realized that climate change is not something happening somewhere else, at some point in the future…but a phenomenon that is killing people here and now。 There is no way to ignore the evidence any longer。” (67)。 tTransitioning aptly to the chapter on the effects of climate change, readers learn how the climate crisis affects our health, from air quality, to the correlation between heat and illness, to disease transmission。 I found the link between antibiotic resistance and warmer climates particularly alarming (147-148)。 I appreciated that environmental racism was highlighted as well, along with climate refugees。 A quote I found particularly impactful was highlighted from the perspective of Indigenous communities: “Biodiversity is our best partner。 Because we don’t regard nature as a tool, something you can own, use and destroy。 Nature is our supermarket, our pharmacy, our hospital, our school。 And for many Indigenous communities, it is even more than that: it is the essence of our spiritual life, our culture, the source of our language。 It is our identity” (172)。 What a beautiful way to recognize nature; if only more of humanity looked at nature that way。 But then again, as pointed out a few pages later, “…。those who care most for our planet, our forests, our sources of fresh water, are those who are most impacted by their destruction” (176)。 tThe fourth section opens with a very aptly named essay entitled “How can we undo our failures if we are unable to admit that we have failed?”, and then continues on with essays about denialism, government climate targets, fossil fuels, and more。 I loved the quote saying, “The message that should lodge with politicians and the public is that climate change must be averted at any price because its ultimate cost can be neither imagined nor calculated” (193)。 Also powerfully said, “How can we look our children in the eye when we know they might live to witness the toppling of our life support systems?” (348)tI loved how each section of this book had short essays on multiple topics。 It felt very well rounded and easy to follow, allowing the reader to jump around while still gaining a wealth of knowledge。 I particularly found Greta Thunberg’s essays to be the most powerful, staying with me long after I finished the book。 One of my favorites was this:t"They say we must be able to compromise。 As if the Paris Agreement is not already the world’s biggest compromise。 A compromise which has already locked in unimaginable amounts of suffering for the most affected people and areas。 I say, No more。 I say, Stand your ground。 Our so-called leaders still think they can bargain with physics and negotiate with the laws of nature。 They speak to flowers and forests in the language of US dollars and short-term economics。。。We are approaching a precipice。 And I would strongly suggest that those of us who have not yet been greenwashed out of our senses stand out ground。 Do not let them drag us another inch closer to the edge…Right here, right now, is where we draw the line。 This is where we stand our ground。 "(305)tHow do stand our ground and make a change? Section five is all about what we need to do now, which, as Greta points out “We can no longer pick and choose our actions- we need to do everything we can…we have to remember that the time for small steps in the right direction is long gone。” (327)。 Essays on overcoming climate apathy and remembering the ocean rest alongside my favorite essay on changing (if you haven’t already) diets to eliminate animal products like beef。 Put more succinctly: t“Replacing US beef with diverse, rigorously nutritious plant-based diets which deliver exactly the same protein mass results in an emission reduction of about 350 million tonnes CO2eq per year nationwide。 As a yardstick, these saving are over 90 per cent of the full emissions of the entire US residential sector。 Take it in: replacing beef with plant alternatives would not only vastly improve our health but it would also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly the same amount as is used today in all our energy-intensive dwellings。” (342)Put another way, “A shift to more nutritious plant-based diets could reduce global emissions significantly, ensuring a more resilient food system, and avoiding up to 5。1 million diet-relating deaths a year by 2050” (135)。 Worth noting too, “The land requirements of meat and dairy production are equivalent to an area the size of North and South America combined。 If we continue making food the way we do, we will destroy the habitats of most wild plants and animals, driving countless species to extinction。 If we lose them, we will be lost too。 If we changed to a plant-based diet, we could feed ourselves using 76 per cent less land。” (434) It baffles me that people still selfishly choose not to eat a plant based diet。 tFinishing off the book were summary sections on what needs to be done, what we can do as a society, and what we can do as individuals, along with a section on why some people (like politicians and the media) can do more than others。 tI highly recommend this book; not only is it informative and captivating, it’s essential。 As Greta states, “This crisis will continue to get worse until we manage to halt the constant destruction of our life-supporting systems- until we prioritize people and the planet over profit and greed” (49)。 That begins with knowledge, and cracking open this book。 。。。more

This book contains so much good information about our Earth。 It is a grim book, reminding us that we should care more for our environment and stop at nothing to repair the damage we have already done to it, and I was filled with dread at many points while reading the book。 If you want a pat on the back instead of the stark reality that we are killing our planet, then you should choose another book。 This should be required reading in all schools and universities。

I urge everyone to please read this book。 Each essay describes a crisis in itself, with details on the causes, the current status, and the proposed mitigation that needs to happen。 Taken together, the gravity of the climate crisis is laid bare, with an equal amount of evidence that urgent climate action is needed。 As Greta states in the book; "It has to be us, and it has to be now"。 Be sure to read to the end of the book where solutions, albeit uncomfortable ones, are described and recommended。 I urge everyone to please read this book。 Each essay describes a crisis in itself, with details on the causes, the current status, and the proposed mitigation that needs to happen。 Taken together, the gravity of the climate crisis is laid bare, with an equal amount of evidence that urgent climate action is needed。 As Greta states in the book; "It has to be us, and it has to be now"。 Be sure to read to the end of the book where solutions, albeit uncomfortable ones, are described and recommended。 Olúfẹ́mi O。 Táíwò summarises the situation clearly; "We have nothing to lose and a world to gain"。 。。。more
